Early years in Orkney, Shetland and Lanarkshire before George Watson’s Boys College in Edinburgh 1959-64. Influenced by his mother and older brother, became interested in stringed instruments and discovered music of Django Rheinhardt and Miles Davis. At school just behind guitarist Charles Alexander who encouraged him and provided some gtr tuition, although mostly self taught. Influenced by Charlie Christian, George Barnes, Herb Ellis and Wes Montgomery. Played with school pal ‘Pete Martin’s All Stars’ in 1960s and remained in mainstream style throughout his career in jazz. By 2014 was playing regularly with John Russell’s ‘Swing 2014’.
