Younger brother of Jimmy (pno) and Tommy Quin (saxes). Says he started at 5 years old on a tin sax made by his father. Early piano lessons from Danny Dorrian and brother Jimmy but tendon injury ended piano ambitions. Tbn at 17 after hearing Acker Bilk band on radio and had tuition with ‘Leith Silver Band’. Joined ‘Bill Salmond’s Savoy JB’ then moved on to ‘Jack St Clair’s JB’ and then ‘Climax JB’ during Jack Weddell’s absence in London. Said that his association with the ‘purist’ jazz tradition was not a deliberate one but came about by his playing with bands that played in that style. Switched to bs gtr at age 24 in 1967 and played dance music until returning to tbn, jazz and his own ‘Templehall Stompers’ in 1983. Re-joined Bill Salmond in the ‘Louisiana Ragtime Band’ in 1990, while continuing with his own band. Later gave up band leading when he ‘needed a break’ but continued to play with the ‘LRB’, the ‘Spirits of Rhythm’, the ‘Anti-Climax JB’ and some mainstream styled jazz with the reeds player Ian Boyter until his death from cancer in 2011.
