Educated at George Watson’s Boys College, Edin. Started on ukele then guitar playing music of Duane Eddie and the Shadows. Recruited at school to play bass guitar in rock band then exposed to music of Django Reinhardt. Became involved with school group including Pete Martin and Lachlan MacColl and also with piano player Alan Anderson. Largely self taught but took lessons with Dougie Campbell. Played dance work with Duncan Lonie and jazz work with Jack Finlay and Ron Dunn. Guitarist Bill Mulholland was a major influence. Played with bands led by Pete Martin, Ken Ramage and Ron Rae. Played in Imperial Hotel with voc Jimmy Leslie and with Head with drummer Bill Kyle. Ran Edin. University Jazz Club. For 9 years Dir. of Jazz Centre Soc. in London. Since 1982 has concentrated on own playing and teaching guitar at Richmond Adult and Community College. In 1984 founded Jazzwise Publications and presented radio shows including BBC Radio’s Six Silver strings. Wrote ‘Masters of Jazz Guitar’ and co-authored 2 books with Nick Freeth – ‘The Accoustic Guitar’ and ‘The Electric Guitar’. Working in 2011 in duo with Andy Robinson.
