Learned pipe band drumming in Scouts aged 10 years and bought a drum kit after leaving Scouts. First gig was depping for Kenny Duff in the Jimmy Walker Quintet. In 1951 played on Sunday nights in India Buildings modern jazz club with Ronnie Carruthers and Alex Tait. Nat service in RAF 1952-54 when he played in camp trio in Germany. After return to Edinburgh, played with Tony Fusco band in Picardy Place dance hall and with Fred Murray (bs), Fred Duligal (ten sax) and Bert Valentine gigging at American Bases. In 1956 joined Pete Seaton at the George Hotel and remained there for next 13 years but also did gigs for BBC with Matt Matheson (pno) and Gerry Rossi (bs) on programmes such as ‘Variety Ahoy’ and ‘Piano Provided’ and also recorded for STV at the gateway on Bill Tenant’s ‘Come Tuesday’ programme. Took a 2 month vacation in 1963 to go cruising to West Indies with a Geraldo Orchestra with Tom Fimlay (pno) and Ronnie Dunn (bs). In 1971 with Alex Shaw (pno) and Ronnie Rae (bs) played at the Elm Tree in West Calder and played a number of Edinburgh University lunchtime sessions accompanying musicians of the stature of Tubby Hayes (ten sax) and Joe Harriot (alto sax). Worked with many small groups in EIJFs from 1983-86. Never purely a traditional jazz musician, he had a formidable technique and could hold his own with the best in modern jazz combos.
